Entering a Detailed Hole Section

Daily Operations Report > Hole Sections

This topic outlines how to enter a complete hole section including the details of the wellbore annulus.

For information on specific fields in Hole Sections see Hole Section Fields.

  1. To enter a Hole Section, click the addrow.gif button to add a row to the spreadsheet.

  2. If the hole is to be plugged back or opened up select the Pilot Hole check box.

  3. Enter a descriptive name for the hole section in the Section field.

  4. Enter the MD Top and Hole Section Start Date/Time.

Note: OpenWells software will not allow another hole section to be created when the MD Top field is blank.

  1. Enter the Effective Hole Diameter of the hole section drilled.

  2. Select the Drilling Phase that best defines the drilling of the hole section. This phase is used in calculating the hole length and drill rate of an Offset Well during the selected phase

  3. The Previous Hole Section's Last Casing/Liner area defines the details of the casing run in the previous hole section.

  4. If a liner was run in the previous hole section, select the Liner check box.

  5. Enter the details of the Casing/Liner, that was run in the previous hole section, in the OD, ID,  MD Shoe etc. The MD Shoe field is used in calculating the hole length of an Offset well.

  6. Select the Casing Phase that best defines the casing run in the previous hole section. This phase is used in calculating the hole length of an Offset Well during the selected phase.

  7. Enter the details of the Casing you plan to run in current hole section in the Next Casing OD, Next Casing Set MD and Next Casing Set TVD.

Alternatively, click the Select Next Casing from Plan Assembly button, to select a planned casing assembly from the Well Planning report. The OD, Next Casing Set MD and Next Casing Set TVD are populated from the Well Planning report.

  1. When drilling of the hole section is complete, enter the MD Base and the Hole Section End Date/Time.

By default, OpenWells software automatically adds a row for Open Hole to the Annular Details spreadsheet. The Effective Hole Diameter for this row was entered in Step 5.

  1. Click the insertrow.gif button to add a row to the Annular Details spreadsheet above the Open Hole row.

  2. Select Casing from the Section Type picklist.

  3. Enter the Casing's Length, ID and the Effective Hole Diameter of the cased hole section.

Note: If this data is going to be used to create an OpenWells case in WELLPLAN™ software, be sure to enter the hole size  of the Casing in the Size field.

The following three steps are only applicable for offshore wells that use a Riser.

  1. Click the insertrow.gif button to add a row to the Annular Details spreadsheet above the Open Hole row.

  2. Select Riser from the Section Type picklist.

  3. Enter the Riser's Length, ID and the Effective Hole Diameter of the cased hole section.
