Hole Sections Data

Interactive Well Site > Available Daily Operations Data

Hole Sections define sections of the wellbore based on its maximum hole size.

The Hole Sections area is used to:

When a hole section is entered it continues to appear on each subsequent day, for its wellbore (sidetrack) and any wellbores it parents.

WELLPLAN Note: Hole section geometry is included in the data sets copied in the WELLPLAN "Create Case for OpenWells" workflow.

Hole Sections data is recorded from the surface and subsurface Daily Operations link or from the Hole Section image on the subsurface canvas.

The Hole Sections form allows the user to add, review, modify and delete hole section data on a daily basis.

This form also includes a wellbore schematic built into the Hole Section form. Use the schematic to verify the data being entered makes sense. Right-click the schematic to magnify the image.

OpenWells ships three versions of this form, click on one of the links below to access information on how to enter Hole Section data.

Special Fields and Functions

Some fields on this form are automatically populated from data entered in areas of the application, involve calculations performed by OpenWells® software or have other significant features.

Sidetrack Number, Wellbore and MD Kick Off

These fields identifies the current wellbore and the point at which the sidetrack occurred. These fields originates from the Wellbore Properties dialog.

Event Name

The Event occurring at the time the hole section was entered appears in this field.

Hole Name

The Hole Name field should be used to easily identify the hole section being recorded. An example could be 26” Hole or 5” Liner.

MD Top

This field identifies the starting depth of the hole section. This field must be populated for OpenWells to allow the addition of another hole section.

MD Base

This filed identifies the ending depth of the hole section.

Hole Section Start Date/Time

This field identifies the date and time drilling of the hole section started.

Hole Section End Date/Time

This filed identifies the date and time drilling of the hole section completed.

Effective Hole Diameter

This field identifies the diameter of the open hole section. The effective hole diameter is used by the following applications: OpenWells®, PROFILE™ and iWellFile™ to draw the hole size.

Drilling Phase

The Drilling Phase is used in to calculate the Hole Length and Drill Rate of an Offset Well during a Drilling Phase. For more information, see Offset Wells.

Casing Landed in Previous Hole Section

These fields define the casing run in the hole section drilled previous to the current one. For example, when entering a 8 -1/2" hole section, enter the 9-5/8" casing run in the 12" hole section in this area.

Copy from Casing Button

The Copy from Casing button is used to populate the Cased Hole Details (for the Previous Hole Section) fields with data already entered into a Casing form. When this button is selected, the Select Casing dialog appears.

Select the applicable Casing report and click OK.

The Casing data is copied to the Cased Hole Details fields.

Liner

The liner check box is used to identify the entered in this area as belonging to a liner.

MD Shoe (Last Casing MD Shoe)

The MD Shoe field is used with the Casing Phase in determining the hole section depth for Offset Wells. This is only true when OpenWells software has been configured to use hole sections to determine the Technical Limit calculations. For more information, see Offset Wells.

Last Casing Phase

The Last Casing Phase is used to calculate the Hole Length and Drill Rate of an Offset Well during a Casing run. For more information, see Offset Wells.

Casing Planned to be Run

These fields identify the casing you plan to run in the current hole section. For example, for a 12-1/4"Open Hole that you plan to case with a 9-5/8" casing. This data is planned not actual.

Select from Plan Button

This button allows you to select a planned assembly from the Casing Program in the Well Planning report. To select a casing from the Well Planning report, click the Select Next Casing from Plan Assembly button. The Select Next Casing dialog appears displaying a list of available planned casing assemblies. Select the appropriate assembly and click OK. The OD, Next Casing Set MD and Next Casing Set TVD fields are populated with values from the Casing Program.

Annulus Details

The Annulus Details spreadsheet is used to define the wellbore annulus, used in calculating fluid volumes. This area is used by WELLPLAN™ software when creating an "OpenWells Case" and used by the following applications: OpenWells, PROFILE and iWellFile when defining the diameter of Open Hole sections in schematics.

Note:  Data entered in the Annulus Details spreadsheet is directly dependant on the row selected in the Hole Sections spreadsheet. To enter data for a specific row in the Annulus  Details spreadsheet, make sure that the appropriate row has been selected (i.e., click on a cell of the row).

Section Type

The Section Type identifies the section of the annulus being recorded. Three options are available:

Length

If this is the bottom section, the length is calculated based on the depth specified in the MD Base field. The length will automatically be adjusted when the length of a section above it is changed. The lengths of all current sections should add up to the amount of the MD Base for the Hole Section. This field is also used to calculate Annular Volumes in the Fluid Handling Data form.

IMPORTANT Note: In cases where a scab liner is used in the wellbore, these casings should not be recorded in the Hole Section details, as they are subsequent to the hole section development. A casing report should be created to cover any scab liners. If these liner are added in the Hole Section details, the Open Hole Length calculation will not take into account that this is an overlapping casing and the length will be incorrect.

Depth

The Depth in the last row of the spreadsheet is always equal to the MD Base.

For every row added above the depth is calculated as follows:

Depth  = MD Base - Length

ID

This field records the Body ID of the Casing or Riser.  If this is an open hole section, enter the diameter of the bit or a better estimate of the washed-out hole size. This field is used by WELLPLAN software when "Creating an OpenWells Case".

Effective Hole Diameter

This field identifies the actual diameter of the open hole section. The effective hole diameter is used by the following applications to draw the hole size: OpenWells, PROFILE and iWellFile. This field is also used to calculate Annular Volumes in the Fluid Handling Data form.

Size

This field is used by WELLPLAN software when "Creating an OpenWells Case" to determine the value used for hole size. This field is also used to calculate Annular Volumes in the Fluid Handling Data form.

Select from Casing Button

The Select from Casing button can be used to define the cased section of the Wellbore in the Hole Section Details spreadsheet using existing Casing reports. To select a casing from a Casing report, click the Select from Casing button. The Select Casing dialog appears displaying a list of available casing assemblies. Select the appropriate assembly and click OK. The ID, Drift, Effective Hole Diameter fields are populated with the Min ID in the Casing report and the Item Description is populated with the Assembly Name.

Select from Catalog Button

The Select from Catalog button can be used to define the cased section of the Wellbore in the Hole Section Details spreadsheet. To select a casing from a Casing catalog, click the Select from Catalog button. The Casing Catalog  dialog appears. Select a catalog from the Catalog picklist. Double-click to make an initial selection in any one of the columns. This will narrow down the selections available in the other columns below the Catalog field. Note: Single-clicking on selections does not accurately select the item. Click the Reset button at any time to restart the selection. Double-click on an item in any one of the columns and the selections will again be filtered. As data is selected in each column the other columns are dynamically changed to reflect the selections available. Once a selection is made in all columns so that one item remains the OK button becomes available. Click OK to add the catalog item to the spreadsheet.

Units Picklist units_pic.gif

The Unit Management System in the EDM™ database controls display units in EDT™ applications. Every numerical element in the EDM database has a storage measure (some known quantity in the physical world) associated with it such as feet, ft/sec, or °F.

In OpenWells® software, Active Viewing Units (or Display Units as they are sometimes referred to) are for presentation purposes only. Display units can changed at any time and do not affect the quality of the data.

Active Viewing Units for the OpenWells application are selected from the Unit picklist located at the top of each page.

Datum Selector datum_pic.gif

The reference point for depths changes over the life cycle of a Well, with changes in rigs and viewing data requirements.

The Datum Selector, located at the top of each page, allows users to change displayed the depth reference point (datum) on the fly.

Changing the depth reference point displays depths relative to the datum selected. This DOES NOT change the values in the database itself.

Data MUST be entered correctly in context to the selected datum reference point.

The following example shows how the viewing datum affects the data you see.
