Survey Properties
Daily Operations Report > Survey Section
The Survey Properties dialog box is used to define a Survey Header and define the survey tool to be used. This dialog establishes the permanent data reference for the survey. Once this information is entered, it is rarely changed.
The General tab is used to enter the properties of the Survey Header.
The Survey Properties dialog box also contains an Audit tab. For information on this tab, see the Audit Tab topic.
Name
The Survey Name must be unique within the Well.
Note: If a name is not entered in this field and the user tries to exit the Survey Properties dialog, the following message appears, "The survey name cannot be empty." The survey name is also checked against all other survey names used for the Well. If the name entered is not unique to the Well, the following message appears, "The survey name already exists within this well."
Survey Start and End Date
The Start and End date fields define a date range in which the header appears in Daily Operations reports. Survey headers with a start and end date on or before the current report date appears in the survey header spreadsheet for that report date.
Survey Tool
Survey Tools appearing in this picklist are created in the Survey tab of the Company Properties dialog .
Integration Note: The survey tool used here is very important if OpenWells survey data is shared with COMPASS™ software, where it is used to assign a survey tool error model. The specified tool is used in all anti-collision calculations. Therefore, proper selection and definition of each tool’ s errors and tolerances is critical to proper compilation of positional uncertainty in COMPASS software.
User Defined
Selecting this option allows the user to customize the tie-on point calculation, which is used as a baseline for survey station calculations. In this case, the user would manually enter the Measured Depth (MD), Inclination (Inc), Azimuth (Azi), True Vertical Depth (TVD), Northing (N/S) and Easting (E/W).
From Wellhead
Selecting this option defines the tie-on point as from the wellhead. The initial Measured Depth (MD), True Vertical Depth (TVD), Northing (N/S) and Easting (E/W) would equal zero. The user must enter the Inclination and Azimuth of the wellbore; zero for untied wells; non-zero for start wells.
From Survey
Selecting this option allows the user to select a Survey Header previously used on the wellbore. The default tie-on point would be the last survey station of the selected survey.
Note: There are only two situations in which a survey tie-on would be entered:
to initialize the origin of the Well survey (for the first survey of the Well)
to establish a new starting point for a survey tool (for all subsequent surveys)
Locked check box
Select the Locked check box to lock Survey Properties at the end of the survey tool run. This prevents the survey stations from being edited by other users who do not have the locked data password.
Note: Surveys locked in OpenWells® software are also locked in COMPASS software and visa versa.
