Attachment Properties

OpenWells® software Features > Attachments

When the New Attachment... command is selected the Attachment Properties dialog appears. This dialog is used to select a file or folder to be associated with the currently selected Well Explorer data item. Attachments appear in the Associated Data Viewer in the Drilling applications (e.g., OpenWells® software, WELLPLAN™ software, COMPASS™ software, PROFILE™ software, StressCheck™ software and CasingSeat™ software).

Use this dialog to associate a document, picture (Word, Excel, text file, JPG, etc.), or folder with a node in the Well Explorer. Attachments can be associated with any level in the Well Explorer except the database_icon.gif Database node, Attachments can be of any type with a recognized extension, and be added to the database or associated by a link to the file on the network or local drive. Folders are associated with a link to expose the contents of the folder.

Special Fields and Functions

File Attachment

Select this radio button and use the Browse button to navigate to the location of the file. This is the path to the attachment.

Save attachment as a link/shortcut only

Check the box if you want to save the attachment as a link only.

If you check this box, only the path to the disk file is stored in the EDM™ database. Any edits you make are saved to the original disk file. You can edit the file directly from the Well Explorer, or you can edit the disk file from its disk location; the changes are reflected in both places. In the Associated Data Viewer, the icon representing a Linked document is shown as a paperclip with a small arrow (attachment_linked_icon.gif ) in the lower left corner. Attachments that are added to the database are shown as paper-clips only without the small arrow (attachment.gif ).

Folder Attachment

Select this option and use the Browse button to navigate to the location of the folder to be attached. This is the path to the folder and a relative link to the location on the network or local drive. Folder attachments, shown as a folder with a small arrow in the lower left corner (attachment_folder_icon.gif ), are added as links to the database and cannot be exported. Double-clicking on the folder attachment icon in the Associated Data Viewer will open the folder in Windows Explorer to expose the contents and allow access to the files in the folder.
